The Outstanding Tiny Desk original: Charlie Wilson’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert
Where to watch the original Outstanding Tiny Desk performance by Charlie Wilson, which part of it the AI meme uses, and how the original differs from the AI versions.

Every Outstanding Tiny Desk AI video starts from one real performance. Searches like “outstanding tiny desk original”, “charlie wilson tiny desk outstanding” and “outstanding npr tiny desk” are people looking for it. Here is where to find it and what is in it.
The original: Charlie Wilson’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert
The clip comes from “Charlie Wilson: Tiny Desk Concert” on NPR Music’s YouTube channel, which has more than 7 million views. Charlie Wilson’s own site dates the video 6 August 2023. Wilson was the lead singer of The Gap Band, and at the desk he performs “Outstanding”, the 1982 hit he first recorded with them.
It was a hit before the memes. Defected Records shared it with “OUTSTANDING!!! Charlie Wilson Tiny Desk for NPR is the best thing we’ve seen in a while”, a post with more than 81,000 reactions, and fan accounts on TikTok and Instagram have been reposting the “Outstanding” moment since 2023.
Which part the meme uses
The meme uses roughly the last 19 seconds of “Outstanding”: the band at the desk, a long held note, a laugh and a wave, and a sax solo. Jake Whipple, who made the viral college football version, worked from a vertical 30-second cut of it. The version every Tiny Desk Outstanding AI video follows is 13 seconds in three shots:
- 0:00 – 0:05. Three singers in headphones at the desk, one at a red keyboard.
- 0:05 – 0:11. The laughing close-up.
- 0:11 – 0:13. The sax solo in front of the bookshelves.
Original vs. AI versions
The setting never changes: the crowded wooden shelves, the desk, the headphones and the microphones on stands. Only the faces do. As one Reddit commenter explained about the coaches version, the AI copies a new likeness onto the people already in the shot, “so nothing outside of them is changed.” That is why the original performance is worth watching in full: the groove, the band and the joy are all real, and they are what makes the swapped versions funny.
Watch it, then make yours
